BAHAMA MEASUREMENT GUIDELINES:
SHUTTER HEIGHT: Functional Aluminum Bahama Continuous Hinge Shown is optional and is not included in the height you choose for your shutter. Please take this into consideration when determining what height to order your shutters.
The standard wall mount hinge extends approximately 2" above the height of your shutter and is not included in the shutter height you choose so be aware if you are installing in a trapped area you will need to adjust the shutter height you order.
The ceiling mount hinge extends approximately 5/8 inch above the shutter and is also not included in the height you choose for your shutter so you will have to take this into consideration when installing in a trapped area.
When deciding what height to order your shutters you should determine the point above your window you want the shutter to reach at the top of the hinge and then take into consideration the above information about the added height the type of hinge you choose is going to add. If you do not have any obstructions above the window we would recommend you measure up approximately 2” to 3” above the top of your window then subtract the hinge height to arrive at the shutter height you should order. In a trapped area you should also subtract a little extra besides the hinge to allow clearance so the shutter does not rub the sill at the bottom. Usually 1/4” to 3/8” is sufficient for this clearance. If you have a flat window trim above the window we would usually measure from the top of your window trim down to the point you want the bottom of the shutter and subtract the hinge height to arrive at the height to order your shutters.
Please NOTE that these are general recommendations and will not suit every situation, please use your common sense and order appropriately but make sure the shutter extends above the window enough to mount the hinge into a solid surface.
BAHAMA WIDTH: If you are using holdout arms on your shutters the width you choose should be wide enough so the arms will be installed on the window trim or siding. That means you will need to add some amount to the shutter width beyond the actual window size. In general if you are going to use arms installed behind the shutter you should add at least 3” to the window width, that will give you 1.5” past the window on each side to install the arm bracket on the house or trim. If you are going to use arms mounted at the side of the shutter (which would generally be my choice) you could probably get by adding a little less.
Aluminum Bahama Shutter Top Hinge Install Guidlines:
Mounting screws are not included, choose screws based on your specific project such as corrosion-resistant self-drilling screws (e.g., #14 screws used for metal roofing) or fasteners for brick installations (e.g., ¼-inch Tapcon concrete anchors).
- Mark the first two screw holes 1.5 inches from either end of the hinge header.
- Space the remaining holes equally along the length of the hinge at approximately 10” to 12” apart.
- Drill each marked hole using a 9/32 inch drill bit or one slightly larger than your selected screw diameter.
- Hold the shutter up to the window to determine the position you want to install the shutter. At this point take the shutter down and remove the wall portion of the hinge from the shutter by sliding it off of the shutter. You can then hold the hinge up to the wall and screw the hinge to the wall. At this point you can slide the shutter back onto the hinge that is screwed to the wall. You are now ready to install the hold out arms.
